Feeds on fish, larvae of water insects particularly those of the dipterous and orthopterous groups. Breeds twice a year from January to October. The nest is a floating platform of water weeds containing about 4 to 5 eggs. While still fresh, the eggs are greenish white but water, dampness and decaying vegetation turn them brown.
