- Notes - Scientific name: Pithecophaga jefferyi Family: Accipitridae Local names: Aguila (Tag); Aguila, Manaol (Vis); Mamboogook, Malamboogook, Banog (Bagobo, Mandaya, Manobo, Tagaka-olo); Garuda, Manaol (Maranao, Maguindanao); Tipule (Subano) Other common names: Great Philippine Eagle Conservation status: CR (Critically Endangered) Largest eagle of the Philippines (3 feet long) with a remarkable, highly arched, powerful bill. Above rich brown; top and sides of head buff with brown shaft streaks, the feathers forming a crest. Underparts buffy white; thighs with indistinct reddish brown shaft stripes. Eyes pale blue. Found only in the least accessible parts of the eastern islands (recorded from Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao). This wonderful rare eagle deserves complete protection. It feeds apparently on monkeys and other large mammals, occasionally on chickens. In flight it can be distinguished from the sea eagle by the long tail, rounded wings, and by its flapping flight with little soaring (like a giant Goshawk).
