Lesser, median, and greater upper wing-coverts with white tips, forming 3 bars across the wing. Underparts rufous, lighter on the abdomen, with 2 white cross bands, separating throat from breast and breast from abdomen. Scapular stripe of female rufous. The general color may also be more grayish or brownish. Size differ among subspecies.
