- Notes - Scientific name: Nycticorax caledonicus manillensis Local name: Lapay-dagat (Pil); Bakaw gabi Tagalog); Lapay (Vis) Family: Ardeidae Other common names: Nankeen Night heron Conservation status: LC (Least Concern) The rufous night-heron is quite common in Bantayan, Basilan, Bohol, Calaya, Camiguin, Catanduanes, Cebu, Leyte, Luzon, Marinduque, Masbate, Mindoro, Negros, Panay, Samar, Sibuyan, Tablas, and Ticao. It feeds at night on fish, small crustaceans, and insects, and roosts during the daytime in lakes, swamps, or lofty trees standing in the open. Nests in colonies togerther with the purple heron as found in Calatagan and in Batangas during April to June.
