- Notes - Scientific name: Buceros hydrocorax hydrocorax Family: Bucerotidae Local names: Calao, Kalaw Other common names: Great Philippine Hornbill, Philippine Brown Hornbill Conservation status: NT (Near Threatened) Large bird, the size of a small hen turkey. Very large bill with flattened casque. Head and neck rufous chestnut, with black around the bill and casque; breast dull black; mantle and wings brown; belly chesnut; tail white, usually stained yellowish buff. Their young is colored mottled brown and white. These large hornbills are common in lowland forests, resorting to high trees in small flocks, at times ascending mountains. With their loud, harsh voices and droning flight, they are noisy and conspicuous as they move from forest to forest. The flight consists of a few wing strokes, followed by a comparatively long period of soaring. In flight and when they alight, they burst into a resoundong chorus of kang-how, he-haw-haw, which can be heard a mile away.
