- Notes - Scientific name: Hydrophasianus chirurgus Family: Jacanidae Local name: Balantukan, Gok (Pil) Other common names: (Chinese) Water-pheasant Conservation status: LC (Least Concern) Adult (nuptial plumage): Head and throat white. Wings white except for black tips. Hind neck golden yellow, bordered in front and on the sides with black.Mantle dark brown, with a violet or purple gloss. Rump, tail, breast, and abdomen black. Central tail-feathers very long. Adult (winter plumage): Above bronzy-brown, feathers with ocher edges. Tail short and pinted; outer tail-feathers white. Top of head rufous. Underparts white; breast washed with buff. Black lines from either eye along the sides of the throat join and expand into a chocolate brown patch on the breast. Legs gray or green. Habits those of all jacanas. Call: mewing. Fairly abundant in fresh-water swamps and along the edges of lakes containing a dense growth of water plants.
