Above dark brown, with narrow white shaft streaks on neck, mantle, and wing-coverts; tail feathers bordered with yellow. Head, throat, chest, and flanks blackish brown; middle of breast and belly white with a few black marks on the sides. Immature: similar but paler. The species is also found in Malaysia. The Philippine subspecies is slightly lighter, less brackish, and also occurs on Palawan. Common and widely distributed throughout the islands but is never very abundant. Lives in paddy fields and on the edge of woods.
