- Notes - Also known as the annatto tree, which grows from four to six meters tall. The seeds are used commercially as food coloring, in dye preparation, and in making brown shoe polish and floor wax. Medicinally, a decoction of the bark is used in the treatment of catarrhal fever; the red substance of the seeds is used in healing certain skin diseases. the leaves with indigoand th leaves fo citrus are used to make a decoction taken after childbirth. Boiled annatto leaves on the head is said to cure fever among children.
The tree is 4 to 6 meters high and leaves , 8 to 20 cm. long; flowers, borne in clusters, are white to pinkish. the fruits are ovoid; green to reddish purple, covered with soft spines and containing small, dark red seeds.
