- Notes - Silliman University in Dumaguete is the oldest American-established institution of higher learning in the Philippines. Formerly known as Silliman Industrial Institute, it was founded by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions and named after Dr. Horace Silliman in 1901. Opened on August 28, 1901 as the Silliman Institute by its first president Dr. David Hibbard as the Silliman Institute . It began with 15 pupils enrolled in its industrial school which was housed in a small nipa hut. Considered one of the five great mission schools in the world, it is located amidst flowering trees along the sea front. (See also AR00319)
