| Notes |
- Notes - Egg-laying turtle. After the eggs are laid, the turtle covers the hole with sand and presses it over the hole with both hind appendages. When this is done the turtle uses mostly the fore flippers to shovel the sand over the hole aided at times by the hind flippers. It takes the animal at least 30 minuts to finish covering the hole before it goes back to the sea, returning ashore a week later to lay another batch of eggs. The eggs are left to hatch by themselves. Chelonia mydas hatch in two weeks after laying. After hatching, the young do not go emerge from the sand until after two or three days. On reaching the surface, the young turtles immediately run toward the sea. This habit is instinctive.
