- General note - The Banco EspaƱol-Filipino de Isabel II, now known as the Bank of the Philippine Islands, was established on August 1, 1851, following a royal order decreeing the foundation of a public bank. The bank's express aim was to encourage the use of savings for commercial purposes. Its symbol, the royal coat of arms, was awarded by the Queen of Spain herself.
