The abactinal surface(opposite the surface where the mouth is found; shown in photo) of the starfish is covered with numerous spinelets which are some 2 millimeters long, slightly tapered, skin-covered and smooth. It has has from 13 to 16 rays which are also covered with spinelets( from 5 to 10 millimeters long)
