Title Statement
  • Title - Ifugao house
General Note
  • General note - A typical Ifugao house--a one-room affair where the family lives, sleeps, cooks, and eats. It is elevated from the ground by means of four corner posts of hewn trees, "sturdy tree-trunks with roots intact." The baskets hanging from under the floor are chicken coops. The large block shoulders on the corner posts are for keeping out rats. The anthropologist R.F. Barton says in his book Ifugao Law that the Ifugao house is "one of the best houses built by a Philippine population...The house is so constructed that its own weight holds the frame together." No nails are used; the pieces that make up the structure are carved so as to interlock (Barton, 1969, Plate 14; Dulawan, Ifugao Culture and History, 34; see also PE00760).
