General Note
  • General note - Prince Rajak Carlito C. Buntas (see PE00248) in the costume of a bagani, a title given to a warrior and leader. The black headpiece--on which the emblem of Mandaya royalty is embroidered--is called sinakbay. It is worn only by the highest-ranking leader of the tribe. The prince is head of some 1,000 Mandaya-Dibabaon families in Davao del Norte. Although they go by different names, the Mandaya and the Dibabaon actually belong to one cultural group having a common language (Manandaya), and similar customs, traditions, costumes, and physical characteristics. They differ in their place of origin: the Dibabaon come from the area along the Saug River in the lower Agusan region; the Mandaya are from the lower Tagum and Hijo Rivers. Mandaya means "inhabitants of the upland," and the Dibabaon are sometimes referred to as the upper Mandaya tribe.
