- Notes - Soon after the Jesuits returned to the Philippines in 1859, the city council of Manila asked them to take charge of the Escuela Municipal, a public primary school for Spanish boys along Calle del Arzobispo in Intramuros. In 1864, Father Jose Cuevas submitted a plan for its expansion to become a school of secondary instruction. The plan took effect in 1865 and the name of the school was changed to Ateneo Municipal. The institution, now known as Ateneo de Manila, has evolved to become a university which presently has its campus in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
