Until the Spanish troops captured Jolo, Fort Pilar in Zamboanga was the southermost bastion of Spanish rule in the Philippines. It was constructed in 1635 and was designed by Father Melchor de Vera, S.J. (Source: Fortress of Empire, Rene Javellana, 1997)
