Title
  • Title - Fernando C. Amorsolo: Burning of the idols. ca. 1955-1960.
Notes
  • Notes - Oil. 33.5 x 50.5 inches. Gift from IL-FGU. To secure a strong foothold for the Christian faith in the Islands, early Spanish missionaries who accompanied the castillian conquerors ordered the burning of the idols and anitos of the ancient Filipinos. Pagan images and carved wooden figures of the old gods were gathered, by force or persuasion, and collectively cast to the fires. Thus upon erasing the memories of the former faith, a new civilized belief was writ on the religious tablet of the people.
