|
| General Note |
- General note - The Spanish colonial rule saw the rise of many tobacco enterprises, like the Compania General de Tabacos de Filipinas, founded in 1881. This was in response to the Royal Monopoly on Tobaccos created in 1781 by Governor General Jose Basco y Vargas which allowed the government to monopolize the manufacture and trade of tobacco in Manila and in the provinces of Tondo, Cavite, Batangas, Tayabas, Laguna de Bay, Pampanga, Bataan and Bulacan.
