- Notes - Martin de Goiti was dispatched by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1570 to explore the northern regions of the Philippines. There he found the town of Manila, under a Muslim chieftain named Rajah Sulayman. De Goiti and his men conquered the town and in 1571, Legazpi named Manila the capital of the Philippines.
