| Title |
- Title - Damian Domingo: A sheriff of Tondo. 1820.
|
| Notes |
- Notes - In addition to the gobernadorcillo and the vice-mayors, each municipality had several other officials, among whom was the alguacil or bailiff. Chosen by the principalia and approved by the town priest, bailiffs "performed police duties, collected fees and taxes, served writs and made arrests, and took charge of prisoners." The bailiff in this painting is in the finery typical of the upper class at the time (Nick Joaquin, The World of Damian Domingo: Nineteenth Century Manila, 1990, 58).
