Title Statement |
- Title - The General Roxas
|
General Note |
- General note - The General Roxas was the first ship built by the National Shipyards and Steel Corporation. The local mercantile fleet that took years to develop during the American and Commonwealth years was laid to waste during the war. When maritime trade was revived in 1946, the fleet had about 40 ships, all army surplus loaned by the U.S. These ships were later turned over to the Philippine government as part of the surplus property agreement, then sold to local ship operators. By 1958, a fleet of 140 interisland vessels was serving the needs of domestic trade. Meanwhile, offshore shipping remained in the hands of foreigners.
