| General Note |
- General note - The penitensiya is a bloody Holy Week ritual widely practiced in the provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal and Laguna. Done usually on Good Friday, it is an ardent imitation of the Passion of Christ where the participants voluntarily flog their bodies or have themselves flogged by companions with a whip made of bamboo sticks or bits of broken glass. Some, like the man shown in photo, carry a cross and even ask that their palms and feet be nailed to it. (Source: Cuaresma, Gilda Cordero-Fernando and Fernando Zialcita, 2000) YYY
