Title Statement
  • Title - Igorot burial ground
General Note
  • General note - The traditional process of mummification among the Igorot tribes of northern Luzon involves salting the inner organs of the dead to prevent premature decomposition. The body is then tied sitting upright in a death chair, saturated with the juice of guava or patani leaves. It is dried under the sun during the day and fumigated by fire at night. The mummified corpse is then taken to a cave for burial. (Source: Igorot: Traditional Ways of Life and Healing among Philippine Mountain Tribes, Norbert and Perta Kohnen, 1986) YYY
