| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Originally written during the Japanese occupation, Quirino (brother of President Elpidio Quirino) planned this one-volume history of World War II and the Japanese occupation for the return of the Philippine Commonwealth government. Instead, it was shelved for over ten years. The book deals with conditions in the Philippines prior to the war, giving a brief background history of the Philippines. The focus of the book is on the war itself, which goes into detail (but not the author's personal experiences) on conditions in Manila as well as Bataan and Corregidor. Additional material was included in 1958, and the book as published covers the war and occupation from 1941 to 1945. Until the publication of Agoncillo's "The Fateful Years," this was the basic book on the occupation years; it still serves as a quick one-volume introduction to the period. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
