Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Detailed daily record beginning from the start of the war until the end of the war in Europe, May 7, 1945. The author was a Spanish Dominican priest assigned to the Philippines; he was Rector of Letran College from 1936-1945, and his vantage point was from this perspective. Being a Spaniard, he was allowed freedom to travel around; his diary documents not just life in Manila but also in Baguio and other areas. It thus presents a unique record of those years, including the near destruction of Letran in December 1941. In December 1944, he was in Dominican Hill in Baguio, and escaped via truck prior to the American bombings. He and companions were able to link up with American troops near Manaoag, Pangasinan. He returned to Manila while fighting was still going on south of the Pasig; he recorded the stories he heard about the destruction in the south. He continues to describe Manila after the battle, atrocities in Batangas and Laguna, and the new struggle to rebuild. Originally written in Spanish, the English translation was in existence for years, untouched, before it was finally published. (There are a number of deletions, however, from the original Spanish text). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
