General Note
  • General note - The penitensiya is a bloody Holy Week ritual widely practiced in the provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal and Laguna. Done usually on Good Friday, it is an ardent imitation of the Passion of Christ where the participants voluntarily flog their bodies with a whip made of bamboo sticks or bits of broken glass. Some carry a cross and even ask that they be nailed to it. (Source: Cuaresma, Gilda Cordero-Fernando and Fernando Zialcita, 2000) YYY
