Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - "This second of a three-volume biography of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur covers the years of World War II, 1941-1945, when he won praise or censure from millions. On Pearl Harbor Day, MacArthur was commander of the recently formed U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, stationed in the Philippines. The Japanese invaded the islands and quickly forced his disorganized forces on to Bataan and Corregidor. After MacArthur left Corregidor for Australia, he was named commander of the Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA), a low-priority concern among Europe-first planners in Washington. But MacArthur, a master of the press release, drew much attention to himself as he jockeyed with Franklin Roosevelt, George Marshall, and Chester Nimitz, and as he flirted with the presidential politics of 1944. After brilliantly turning the tide against the Japanese in New Guinea and the Bismarcks, MacArthur returned to his obsession, the Philippines, in 1944, and later signed the unconditional surrender aboard the Battleship Missouri on V-J Day. As the General's wartime decisions unfold within the full sweep of events in the Southwest Pacific, MacArthur's complex and contradictory nature emerges--alternately brilliant and foolish, brave and hesitant, innovative and pig-headed. This meticulously researched and objectively presented historical work gives us the best measure available of both the soldier and the man."
