Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Historical novel based on fact, reconstructing the life of the author's mother, Mary Boyd Stagg, an American missionary in Manila. Mrs. Stagg was one of the leaders of the Methodist church in the Philippines; she and her husband, Samuel W. Stagg arrived in the Manila in 1923 and became well known in educational circles. While her husband separated from Mrs. Stagg, she remained strong and resolute. During the Japanese occupation, she was deeply involved in the underground resistance, supplying food and aid to prisoners of war, obtaining intelligence on Japanese military forces in the Philippines, and fighting the Japanese through counter-propaganda. A Filipino traitor eventually told the Japanese about her group and its activities. Mary Boyd was thus arrested, tortured and executed in August 1944. The author, a successful playwright who experienced the war in the Philippines, tried her best to reconstruct her mother's courage and life, presenting this work as a gift to her memory; she died shortly after she finished writing it, in 1996. A helpful introduction by Jovito Salonga, who knew Mary Boyd Stagg personally, provides background information to Mary Stagg, her daughter, and the book. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
