Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - "The subject of this paper is the visit of three Germans to Cavite, which became one of the factors contributing to the friction between American and German naval forces in Manila Bay in 1898. This incident is not mentioned in English language sources and foreign researchers seem unaware of it. Lieutenant-Commander Hintze's main purpose was to meet General Emilio Aguinaldo and the business-minded former consul ad interim Heinrich Spitz intended to engage in some trade, while the incumbent Consul Dr. Friedrich Kruger was on an official mission to negotiate for the release of the Spanish priest Gutierrez. The paper presents details of Hintze's subsequent report, including characterizations of persons present and a summary of the conversations between the insurgents and their guests. Furthermore, this paper presents the German perspective on some of the historical events preceding the capture of Manila Bay by American forces in August 1898.
