  • Notes - Oil on canvas. 7.5 m x 4.25 m. Won the first Gold Medal at the Madrid Exposition of 1884. The subject of the large painting, from classical antiquity (the gladiator combats of Imperial Rome), was in accordance with the requisites of the European Academy. Dead and dying gladiators were dragged from the arena to a hall called Spoliarium.
