Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a professional US Army officer in Mindanao at the start of the war. McGee was stationed in various camps, Philippine Army camps prior to the war, assisting the 101st Division as they train for war. He took an active part in trying to defend Mindanao with insufficient troops and equipment, but had to surrender when Gen. Wainwright ordered the US-Philippine forces to surrender. McGee relates his experiences as a prisoner of war in Malaybalay and the Davao Penal Colony. In the process of being transported out of Mindanao, his prison ship (the Shinyo Maru) was sunk by a US submarine; he and around eighty other prisoners of war managed to escape and were sheltered by Filipino guerrillas. In September 1944, the escaped prisoners were evacuated to Australia on the submarine USS Narwhal. McGee wrote the original manuscript after the war, but published it only after retirement as a clarion call for preparedness and patriotism at the height of the Cold War. Appendices list the survivors of the sunken prison ship. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
