Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Not a diary, but a personal narrative of a US Army officer who was captured on Corregidor. Mellnik was coast artillery officer on MacArthur's USAFFE staff, in charge of developing the Philippine Inland Seas Defense Project. He discusses defense preparations during the last months just before the war, his experiences on Corregidor during the siege, and his becoming a prisoner of war. He was in Cabanatuan and Davao Penal Colony, being one of ten who escaped in April 1943. Aided by guerrillas, he was able to remain out of Japanese hands and was evacuated by submarine to Australia. He rejoined MacArthur's staff and helped collate information from the guerrillas. He returned to the Philippines with MacArthur and directed guerrilla activities during the liberation. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
