Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by a CBS radio reporter who accompanied MacArthur ashore to Leyte and enabled him to broadcast his famous "I have returned" speech. Dunn was sent by CBS to survey radio facilities in Asia in anticipation of war, over a year before the war. He travelled around China, and was in Burma when the war broke out. He was able to get to the Netherlands East Indies to report on developments there, managed to get out before the Japanese got him. In August 1942 he was assigned to Gen. MacArthur's headquarters, and stayed with the General through the rest of the war. He broadcast news of the Leyte campaign, the landings on Luzon, liberation of Cabanatuan prison camp, drive to Luzon, the Battle of Manila and more, most of which he narrates in detail, printing some of his news reports. Being next to MacArthur most of the time, he also gives his observations of the General. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
