General Note
  • General note - True story of the experiences of an American diplomatic family while held by the Japanese in the Erhala Prison Camp in the Philippines for 3 years. - Roderick Hall
Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - This is a classic personal account of an American writer, with her husband (Conservator of Forests and Director of Agriculture in Civil Service) and son, in Sandakan, North Borneo when the war began. She describes the fear and anxiety caused by the war, the arrival of the Japanese and the family's internment for three years, first in Sandakan and then in Kuching. Being a writer, she took notes during her internment days, and was even ordered by the Japanese camp commandant to keep a record, which she did and submitted dutifully. Naturally, it was censored as she could not be totally honest. But the author also kept a separate set of notes, one in which she recorded everything; this was hidden in her son's stuffed toys and managed to survive the war, serving as the basis for this book. Dramatic and intensely personal, it was made into a movie. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
