| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Haney joined the US Marines in 1938, in search of a different life; he was underage and lied about his age to get in. He was sent to China and became part of the "China Marines" - the 4th Marine Regiment. This regiment was sent to the Philippines on the eve of war, arriving in Cavite; Haney saw the bombing of the Navy base, and then was moved to Corregidor; later, he was assigned to the garrison on Caballo Island, where he was when the surrender orders came in May 1942. He describes his becoming a prisoner, transfer to Manila and the subsequent "gloat march," and life in Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, hell ships to Japan and forced labor in Osaka. The dragons in the book's title refer to the difficult memories of prison camp - horrible memories sometimes suppressed, but often emerging unexpectedly. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
