Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Frank Grady (a Captain at that time) was with the US Army's cryptographic department in the Philippines in 1941 until the surrender of Corregidor. He was responsible for encoding and decoding all the important messages sent to and from Manila and Corregidor. He was not evacuated, however, and was taken prisoner by the Japanese. This book, written by Rebecca Dickson based on long conversations with Grady, narrates Grady's remarkable experiences, including fooling Japanese interrogators on American code breaking. He spent three years in prison camp (Camp O'Donnell; Cabanatuan; Bilibid; and from January 1943, camps in Japan). In this account, the best and the worst of people is brought out - among the Americans and Japanese. Grady testified in post-war trials against his Japanese captors, but he was careful not to keep hatred in his heart since he had also seen cases of Japanese humanity. Grady died in 1991; Dickson took it upon herself to write his remarkable story. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
