Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - One of the earlier books which portrayed the atrocities of the Bataan Death March. Levering was a civilian sent from the US to the Procurement Section of the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Philippines just prior to the war. He volunteered to go to Bataan and described his experiences in Bataan (where he noted that peacetime red tape continued), the horrors of the Death March, prison camp life (he was in Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan) and forced labor (in Manila's Port Area). He was transferred to Japan on the hell ship Nissyo Maru in July 1944 and spent the rest of the war in Japan. Eighteen letters from other POWS detailing their experiences are appended as well, as several poems depicting POW experiences. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
