Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of an American missionary lady who went to China in 1940. Sensing that war between China and Japan would worsen and threaten her and her missionary group, she sought haven in Baguio, in the Philippines. There she heard the bombs fall on Camp John Hay on December 8, 1941; heard of the Japanese landings in Lingayen Gulf, and was interned when the Japanese took over Baguio. She details the three years of life in internment camp at Camp Holmes, the risky trek across Central Luzon to Bilibid, and liberation. Rather than writing about the war per se, she writes about "ordinary people struggling against extraordinary odds" - a mixture of people from various walks of life put together in one camp for three years. The book is based on a diary she kept, and is illustrated by pencil sketches the author made during internment. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
