Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a young American who enlisted in the US Army in February 1941, was sent to the Philippines in October, and got caught up in the war in December. Initially assigned to Sternberg Hospital in Manila, Machi served with the 31st Infantry Regiment (US) in Bataan as a medic, and quotes from his diary often. He narrates his experiences from the time he entered the army, voyage to and arrival in Manila, working with the dead and wounded in the early days of the war, moving to Bataan. He cites his diary entries for the fall of Bataan, then continues on to his experiences as a prisoner of war in Camp O'Donnell, then Cabanatuan and finally to Bilibid, where he was liberated in February 1945. He ends with his return, with other American veterans, to Bataan in 1980. He expresses disappointment at some Americans with him in camp, and is all praise for the Filipinos who remained loyal to the Americans. This edition, published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of World War II, is an expanded version of his earlier book "The Emperor's Hostages." - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
