Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - The author was a diver on the USS Canopus in 1941, and saw service with his ship and as infantry in Bataan. The Canopus was scuttled when Bataan surrendered, and Sheats was assigned to Corregidor; he became a prisoner of war when the island fortress capitulated. The unique part of Sheats' war experience is that the Japanese forced him, as well as a handful of American and Filipino divers, to recover the silver which had been dumped into Manila Bay before the surrender. They did their best to sabotage the Japanese attempts at salvage, without being caught red handed. Following this operation, Sheats was detailed to the Manila Port Area work detail, moved to Japan on the prison ship Noto Maru, and spent the rest of the war in Japan, forced to work for the Japanese. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
