Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Dispassionate and objective sociological study of the internment camp at Bacolod. The author was an American research assistant at the University of North Carolina who moved to the Philippines and taught at the University of the Philippines for a year. She married an American engineer and moved to Negros Island, where she was caught by the war with their two children. Her husband joined the army but died in prison camp, while Vaughan and her children hid in the mountains until June 1942. Surrendering to the Japanese, she was interned with 145 other "enemy aliens" in Bacolod Internment Camp. The camp was in existence for nine months, after which the internees were moved to Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila. The nine months of forcible internment are the subject of this study, which is based on the author's doctoral dissertation. Based on her diary, personal observation and participation, this study examines the reactions of a small community grouped together during abnormal conditions. She discusses pre-war conditions, camp organization and activities, the Japanese, and the adjustment of the community's members to the new conditions. Based on the camp's experience, she makes conclusions about the reactions of individuals and society in times of stress. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
