General Note
  • General note - The story of a man who, determined not to give up, assumed the identity of an imaginary civilian and lived another man's life for almost two years in captivity whilst not losing his determination to escape. - Roderick Hall
Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a B-17 bomber navigator in Clark when the war started, who wound up in Bataan waiting for planes to arrive - which never did. When Bataan surrendered, Whitcomb escaped on a boat to Corregidor. When Corregidor was invaded, Whitcomb attempted to escape but was eventually captured. Assuming a different identity, he was imprisoned and tortured in Fort Santiago, but convinced the Japanese that he was a civilian, and not a military man. He was interned at the Santo Tomas Internment Camp, but managed to be repatriated to the US via Shanghai in late 1943. He returned to duty with the US Army Air Force, and in 1945 found himself back in the Philippines with a bomber squadron attacking Japanese forces. An amazing story told well. Whitcomb became a lawyer and a member of the Indiana State Senate after the war, and visited the Philippines to participate in Bataan Day ceremonies. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
