| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Personal account by a coast artilleryman who began the war on Fort Hughes (Caballo Island), only to be transferred to Bataan as infantry, attached to a Philippine Army unit. He fought in the Battle of the Points, and saw action in the final battles on Bataan. He was one of those who was ordered to surrender on April 9, 1942, and narrates in detail his experiences in the Death March, prison and labor camps (Camp O'Donnell, Corregidor, Clark Field, Bilibid, Cabanatuan). He was brought to Japan on a hell ship, and put to work in a mine. Like many other veterans, he sought to put his past behind him, but later decided to put his experiences on paper. He began writing in 1973, but the horrors were so painful to remember that it took a full ten years to complete. Bilyeu relates events as he saw them; to protect the privacy of some individuals, he has changed some names. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
