Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by a young American who joined the US Army in 1940. Sent to Corregidor, Balaza was assigned to the 59th Coast Artillery Regiment; when the war started he was in charge of one of the searchlights covering the North Channel. Balaza writes about lighting up the surrounding waters after the SS Corregidor struck a mine; narrates his experiences on the "Rock" during the siege, and details his experiences as a prisoner of war on Corregidor, Bilibid Prison, Cabanatuan, the Nichols Field detail, hell ship to Japan and forced labor in Japanese coal mines. He cites an order by the Japanese to dispose of all prisoners of war in 1945, which fortunately was not carried out. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
