He joined the US Army Air Corps, was assigned to the 27th Bomb Group and sent to the Philippines two weeks before the start of the war. The group's planes did not arrive and the group was sent to Bataan to fight as infantry. He details conditions during the Bataan campaign, the surrender, the Death March, Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, work details, prison ship to Korea and thence to Manchuria, where he was liberated (by Russians) when the war ended.
