Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal narrative of an American medical officer with the 803rd Engineer Battalion (Aviation), a unit whose main task was to build and maintain airfields. He describes construction of front line defenses in Bataan, as well as other activities of his unit. Coone was later assigned to Corregidor, where he and his company were stationed at Kindley Field. He was captured on the island fort and details his POW experiences on the island, and particularly as a POW doctor in Cabanatuan, and work details in Camp Murphy and Lipa. He was transferred to Japan on the hell ship Haru Maru (which he calls the Horror Maru). Coone's diary memories were arranged in narrative form by Barney M Barco and Lucille Barco Coone. Appendices include a chronology of the war and a roster of Coone's battalion. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
