Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by an American who enlisted in early 1941 and was sent right away to the Philippines, where he was assigned to Corregidor. He was transferred to Fort Drum, "The Concrete Battleship", where he spent the months under siege. Carson begins his book with the surrender on Fort Drum, and goes into great detail of his ordeal under the Japanese as a prisoner of war. The book narrates the agonizing ordeal of three years in labor camps in the Philippines, voyage to Japan on one of the hell ships, and inhuman treatment and forced labor in Fukuoka, but above it all was the author's will to survive. This book was written in attempt to find closure, to remove a wall he had mentally built to shield himself from the ordeal. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
