Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - The author, the daughter of a World War II veteran, did not know much about her father's wartime experiences. After he had died, she discovered his army footlocker which contained a Japanese flag. She began her search for the story behind the flag - a wartime souvenir - and her father's untold story. She went through her father's letters, tells of her experiences in uncovering the story, including visiting battlefields where her father had been in during the war, and returning the flag to the family of the Japanese soldier who had owned it. Her father, Pvt. Norman Steinman, was drafted in 1943, assigned to the 25th Infantry Division and landed in Lingayen in January 1945. He fought in Central Luzon, in the Battle for Balete Pass and the mountains in northern Luzon, memories which he was uncomfortable with. It took his daughter's patient sleuthing to recover it, after meeting Filipinos, Japanese and other friends.
