Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - A novel based on real events and persons in Luzon during the Japanese occupation. The key characters are American: a businessman with long experience in the Philippines; a teacher, a young woman, a military officer. (The businessman's mistress is Filipino, as are his servants.) The book covers life in Manila at the outbreak of the war and under Japanese occupation; Santo Tomas Internment Camp; the fighting on Bataan, the Death March and prison camps; the guerrillas. The events and characters are changed to fit the novel, but in general the mood and the details are accurate (the author points out some of the liberties he took in his acknowledgments). The author did considerable research but also based this novel on his own experiences as the stepson of US High Commissioner Francis B. Sayre in the Philippines; he went back to the US just prior to the start of the war (His stepfather and brother remained behind, however, and were caught up by the war). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
