Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Autobiography of an administrative official at the University of Santo Tomas (he served as University Registrar for fifty years, from 1930-1980). He thus presents an insider's view of the university, and devotes one chapter on UST during the war years. In this chapter, he narrates how the Sampaloc campus of UST became an internment camp for American and allied civilians, even as classes resumed in the Intramuros campus. He cites war losses, and shows how the university coped with those difficult days under the Japanese, and was overjoyed at the return of the American soldiers in 1945. Chapters immediately before and after the war depict conditions and activities of the university just therein including defense preparations in 1941, and bestowing an honorary Ph.D. on Gen. MacArthur just after the liberation of Manila. This book was published posthumously: De Ramos passed away in 1987, shortly after his retirement from UST. His daughter finished the last chapter and readied it for publication twelve years later, after allegedly being prodded by her father's voice. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
